Youths care @ PAYM

On 27 October 2012, YEC conducted an excursion to Gardens by the Bay.  The contingent of 34, consisting of Kebun Baru Youth Executive Committee members, volunteers and 5 families toured around Gardens by the Bay. YEC members were attached to the families and led them around various parts of the garden, like the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest and OCBC Skyway. At the Flower Dome, many were fascinated by the beauty of the flowers and exotic plants. While at the Cloud Forest, many were awed by the majestic waterfall. Walking along the OCBC Skyway, participants had a close up view of the flower pods and took in the view of the skyscrapers in the city in a distance. Everyone went home with wonderful memories and plenty of photographs.

Y Proms @ Jurong Central Park

Our YEC's service learning club students from Mayflower Secondary had a day of fun at the Y Proms @ Jurong Central Park on 25 September 2010. Under the charge of our youth volunteers from PA's Youthslead programme who did the coordinating and planning, the event ran smoothly and participants all enjoyed themselves tremendously.

Partnering with the beneficiaries from the Handicapped Welfare Association, the beneficiaries were brought out for an afternoon of picnic and concert to bring cheer to the underprivileged and to interact with them through ice-breakers and games like scavenger's hunt. The beneficiaries from HWA enjoyed the performances which included lindy hop, band and singing and gamely participated in the games, of which the group emerged tops! Congrats to them!

Bag O Sunshine (Part VII)

Bag O Sunshine - Distribution of Food Packages to Kebun Baru Needy Residents

Date: 14 August 2010
Time: 9am to 12.30pm

The Kebun Baru YEC, in partnership with students from Hwa Chong Institution, gave out food packages to needy residents in Kebun Baru (i.e. 52 PA recipients in the various zones) on 14 August 2010. Letters were sent to PA recipients prior to the event to inform them of the food package distribution. The food package contains, among other things, rice, soap, instant noodles, sugar, canned food.

About 50-60 volunteers from YEC, Mayflower Secondary and Hwa Chong were involved in making this event a success. At each home, the volunteers talked to the residents and find out more about their needs, any problems they faced, their living conditions etc. Their findings and feedback gathered from the informal chat with the families will then be collated subsequently after the event.

The GOH for the event was our adviser, Mr Inderjit Singh. Mr Singh visited a few homes to speak with the PA recipient and their families.

The YEC sincerely thanks all the volunteers and sponsors who have made this event possible!

Background to Bag O Sunshine:
This is a series of community service projects spearheaded by the KBCC YEC and carried out on a quarterly basis. This year, the Bag O Sunshine is once again distributing food items to the needy residents and hope that we can, in our own small way, bring a little sunshine to their lives.

Minister visits Kebun Baru!

After much fanfare and publicity, not least loads of work behind the scenes by the various grassroots organisations, the Ministerial Community Visit finally reached its successful conclusion on 27 June.

Of course, this wasn't without its hiccups, as those of us helping out with the new media coverage (blog + Facebook + Twitter) can attest to. But given the sheer scope of the event with a tight programme scattered over various locations in Kebun Baru), things went smoothly without much of a hitch.

Minister Gan Kim Yong first visited Kebun Baru Mall, followed by Bestari Residents' Centre, Sembawang Hill Food Centre, Mayflower Mall, and finally ended at Kebun Baru Community Club cumulating in a 1 hour dialogue session with residents where a variety of issues were raised and addressed by Minister Gan and the panel.

Our job included vetters and people following the delegation to upload and post photos and live commentary (via Twitter) straight from the location. It wasn't smooth sailing all the way though - with the intermittent network coverage, more often than not, there was a lag for the photos to arrive, compared to tweets that were sent relatively instantaneously. But overall, it was quite exciting posting those updates live just as things were happening on the ground :).

Meanwhile, there were also a few of us stationed at the games stalls where we showcased some YOG related games, like basketball, floorball, baseball and football, where the young and old enthusiastically took part in the games in a bid to net that winning shot. Some of our PA Youthslead participants also helped out in the event, firsthand experiencing the interaction with residents and the logistics behind, overall making the event a successful one.

For more details, you can check out the MCV blog, Kebun Baru Facebook public page, or Twitter.

Cheers,
:).

Bag O' Sunshine - National Museum

Bag O' Sunshine - Trip to National Museum

Date: 20 March 2010

Time: 1pm to 6pm

Venue: National Museum

No. of people: 125

Kebun Baru Youth Executive Committee brought 100 elderly Kebun Baru residents from the Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre (FSC) to the National Museum last week. Five student leaders from Mayflower Secondary School also helped out in this event.

At the museum, everyone was split into three groups, taking turns to visit the Singapore Living Gallery, the Singapore History Gallery and the special exhibition, The Quest for Immortality showcasing the Egyptian culture and mummies.

The Living Gallery was the most popular, showcasing Singapore's food traditions and fashion and notwithstanding some initial language barriers, many of the elderly were enthusiastic in sharing with our youths about the various artefacts on display and reminiscing about the good times back in the 60s and 70s.

At the end of the visit, vouchers were presented to the elderly and everyone went back enriched with a little more knowledge about Singapore's history and culture.

The YEC is grateful to the AMK FSC for this collaboration and to the Mayflower students for their strong sense of volunteerism.

2,000 seniors in Kebun Baru constituency join Wellness Programme

2,000 seniors in Kebun Baru constituency join Wellness Programme

SINGAPORE: With a fast-aging population, the Singapore government wants to get at least half of senior citizens here on regular exercise and health screenings.

In 2008, it piloted a Wellness Programme in nine constituencies, including Kebun Baru to do just that. Since then, the programme has attracted some 2,000 seniors in the area.

Grassroots leaders want to tell residents that staying active need not be hard work, as it can be fun too. There about 25,000 residents aged 50 and above in Kebun Baru, the fastest-aging constituency in Ang Mo Kio GRC after Teck Ghee.

A pilot programme targeted at seniors here recently found that eight in 10 had diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol. The pilot Wellness Programme was rolled out in 2009 to 12 constituencies.

In Kebun Baru, about 2,000 senior citizens took part, of which half did not have regular health screenings. "We've got full-time coordinators together with volunteers, who will reach out to every one of these residents, to follow up with them to make sure they seek some form of medical help," said Inderjit Singh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ang Mo Kio GRC.

Mr Inderjit added that while health screenings had been conducted in the past, there usually was not any follow-up afterwards, and he hopes to change that.

Of course, activities like this are great for family-bonding too!

Said a resident: "It's very busy during normal days, that we hardly have such a good chance for the family to get together to play games. It's very happening lah!"
Even Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is also MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, could not resist joining in.

"I was particularly happy to see the family activities, where the families came together, old and young, and participated in the same event," said Mr Lee. "The warmth, enthusiasm, the fun they had, the smiles on their faces, it's a good feeling that we care for one another and this is what makes our society." About 1,200 residents took part in the sports carnival on Sunday.
